Mr. Leatherbarrow Helps Spread Facial Palsy Awareness

Mr. Leatherbarrow recently contributed his knowledge and expertise to Facial Palsy UK, a charity created specifically to support those affected by the disorder. He has provided the organization with information regarding eye surgery, which will be used to help educate and inform their site’s visitors about their treatment options. He is a member of the organisation’s medical advisory board.

Facial Palsy UK is focused on raising awareness of facial palsy. The charitable organization also works to raise money for facial palsy research, treatment and support groups. The charity is involved in multiple fundraising events and is currently seeking funding for a Facial Palsy Awareness Campaign.

Facial paralysis can affect the upper and/or lower parts of the face on one side, although in rare cases, it can affect both sides of the face. Facial paralysis is the result of nerve damage and can be caused by many factors, ranging from an inflammation of the facial nerve to injury or stroke. The condition can strike at any age and is characterized by a loss of facial movement, with weak or drooping facial muscles. This makes it difficult for the person affected to fully smile or communicate other facial expressions. An ophthalmologist’s input into a patient’s care is extremely important to protect eyesight. A weakness of eyelid closure in facial palsy can lead to exposure of the cornea with a risk of corneal ulceration.

Spreading the word about facial palsy is vital, as a recent study published in the medical journal, the BMJ, showed that almost half of those suffering from Bell’s palsy failed to receive any urgent treatment from their general practitioner — despite evidence showing that early treatment with steroids improves patients’ chances of having a complete recovery.

Another study found that the average time between the onset of facial paralysis and referral to a specialist treatment was 5.6 years. Receiving treatment right away increases the possibility of regaining full functionality of the damaged facial muscles.

For this reason, sharing correct information about facial palsy and what can be done to treat the condition is crucial. Mr. Leatherbarrow, who offers oculoplastic surgical treatment for patients with facial palsy, submitted information regarding such surgery that can help to diminish or reverse the effects of facial paralysis to Facial Palsy UK. He will continue to assist the charity in their goal of spreading awareness and offering support to those affected by facial palsy and their families.
