Mr. Leatherbarrow Lectures at the University of Manchester

Recently, Mr. Brian Leatherbarrow spoke at the Manchester Surgical Skills and Simulation Centre at the University of Manchester. As part of the Manchester Oculoplastic, Lacrimal and Orbital Dissection Course, Mr. Leatherbarrow shared his knowledge and experience as a guest speaker at the event.

The courses took place from January 22nd to 24th, with Mr. Leatherbarrow providing his insight on oculoplastic and orbital surgery. Also known as orbitofacial surgery, oculoplastic surgery is a sub-specialty of ophthalmology dealing of a wide variety of disorder that affect the eyelids, orbit (eye socket), tear ducts, and upper face. These procedures include cosmetic eyelid surgery, eye socket reconstructive surgery, orbital implant surgery and orbital decompression surgery.
The conference covered a broad range of topics, including a focus on anatomy, dissection and surgical techniques, with an advanced surgical skills lab. Other course topics included functional and cosmetic eyelid surgery (such as lower lid transconjunctival blepharoplasty with fat repositioning), brow and midface lifts, lacrimal surgery including nasal septoplasty, orbital decompression techniques, enucleation (removal of the eye) and evisceration.
Mr. Leatherbarrow has extensive experience with performing these procedures, both for cosmetic and functional reasons. As a guest speaker, he joined a number of other well known U.K. surgeons in the field of oculoplastic and orbital surgery. The feedback from those attending the course was excellent.
Attendees of the courses included oculoplastic fellows, established consultants with the purpose of continuing professional development, as well as senior trainees with an interest in oculoplastic surgery. Mr. Leatherbarrow has previously given lectures, run courses and presented scientific papers in many countries, including the United States, Canada, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, South Africa, Barcelona, Australia and New Zealand. His is due to speak about cosmetic eyelid surgery (lower lid transconjunctival blepharoplasty with fat repositioning) in Sydney in September and Beijing in October.
