What are Coleman Fat & Microfat Injections?

Coleman fat injections and microfat injections are techniques often combined with a lower lid blepharoplasty (better known as cosmetic eyelid surgery or an eye lift.) The Coleman fat injection procedure involves removing fat from certain parts of the body, such as the flanks, buttocks, or thighs, and injecting the fat to another area of the body to fill in lost volume. Microfat injections are a newer technique used to correct lost volume in very delicate areas, such as the outer tear trough area below the eyes.

For some patients who undergo a lower lid blepharoplasty, fat injections can enhance the cheeks or mid-face where there is a loss of fat. Fat injections can also be performed for other cosmetic issues – including hollowing of the temples.

During this procedure, fat is removed from the outer aspect of the flanks, buttocks, or thighs with a special syringe. A single small “stab” incision is required in the skin, and this is closed with a single stitch.  The fat is then washed in a closed filtration bag, known as a Puregraft® bag, separating the fat cells from blood and the local anesthetic solution. A tiny skin incision is then made in the cheek area with the tip of a needle. In general, eyelid surgery procedures (and fat injections) are safe and effective. Ideal candidates are healthy individuals who are non-smokers, and who prefer to avoid the use of dermal fillers.
