Many patients assume that cataract surgery is already undertaken using a laser. This is entirely understandable as patients are aware of the ultra-precision offered by surgical techniques using a laser. This has not been the case until now. Laser Cataract Surgery, and Laser Clear Lens Surgery, are finally a reality.
At Mr Leatherbarrow’s ambulatory surgical clinic, Face & Eye in South Manchester, we are amongst the first ophthalmic surgeons in the UK, as well as the rest of the world, to be able to offer the most advanced form of cataract surgery, or clear lens replacement surgery (for the management of optical errors which are not suitable for standard corneal laser correction). Laser Cataract Surgery offers safer, quicker and improved outcomes by eliminating the potential for human error in performing delicate parts of the procedure that may lead to complications and loss of optimum visual function.

The Crystalens HD is the fourth generation of the only FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved accommodating lens and offers improvement in near vision for many patients, as well as the distance vision achieved by standard lenses. The first generation Crystalens accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) was approved by the FDA in November 2003
Our patients have clearly indicated a preference for a high definition experience in vision correction and a truly accommodating IOL helps achieve that goal. The Crystalens HD will help many of our patients experience truly good near vision without compromising on the quality of vision at intermediate or distance.

Manchester Royal Eye Hospital has now moved from its old site into its brand new, impressive, state of the art facility adjacent to Manchester Royal Infirmary and the new Manchester Childrens’ Hospital. It also has its own separate dedicated private patients ward. Most major private operations (e.g. surgery requiring general anaesthesia on a day case basis or with a 1-2 night stay in hospital) for self pay patients can be offered at a lower price than that which is charged by other local private hospitals. Typical operations undertaken in the new facility are: cataract surgery, orbital decompression for thyroid eye disease, enucleation and orbital implant surgery for a blind unsightly eye, cosmetic eyelid surgery or brow lift surgery, midface lift surgery, watering eye surgery (external and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy or DCR), ptosis surgery (droopy eyelid correction), eyelid reconstruction surgery, orbital and eyelid tumour surgery, fat pearl grafting for hollowed eyelids and Coleman fat injection surgery (structural fat grafting). For details contact us at Face & Eye (enquiries@faceandeye.co.uk or telephone 08458 33 22 33) where initial consultations can be offered (except for patients under the age of 18 who can be seen at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital on thursday afternoon/evening)

Restylane and Perlane are now available with a local anaesthetic agent (Lignocaine) combined in the same syringe. This means that the application of local anaesthetic creams or the use of painful dental blocks prior to injection of these fillers are no longer required. This has the advantage of making the treatment faster and much more comfortable. Contact Face & Eye on 08458 332233 for more details of this and other facial rejuvenation treatments, or email enquiries@faceandeye.co.uk

Lower lid blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery, eye bag removal) can be combined with Coleman fat injections (structural fat grafting) which can help to camouflage the outer tear trough defects by improving cheek hollows when these cannot be adequately managed by fat repositioning alone. The fat contains stem cells which can also improve the quality of the skin in the injected areas.
The fat is harvested from the outer buttock area or thigh via a tiny incision which is closed with a singe stitch. The fat is spun down in a centrifuge to separate the cells from blood and local anaesthetic solution. The fat cells are then injected with a fine blunt cannula into the outer aspects of the eyelids at the completion of the blepharoplasty. This can be done under “twilight anaesthesia” on a day case basis.
