Post Enucleation Socket Syndrome Following Loss of an Eye
Post Enucleation Socket Syndrome (PESS)
Many patients who have lost an eye have a condition referred to as the post enucleation socket syndrome (PESS).
Patients typically show the following features:
- Enophthalmos (a sunken appearance of the artificial eye)
- An upper eyelid sulcus deformity (a hollowing of the upper eyelid)
- Ptosis or eyelid retraction (a drooping or retracted upper eyelid)
- Sagging of the lower eyelid
- A backward tilt of the articial eye
