Post Enucleation Socket Syndrome Following Loss of an Eye

Post Enucleation Socket Syndrome (PESS)

Many patients who have lost an eye have a condition referred to as the post enucleation socket syndrome (PESS).

Patients typically show the following features:

  • Enophthalmos (a sunken appearance of the artificial eye)
  • An upper eyelid sulcus deformity (a hollowing of the upper eyelid)
  • Ptosis or eyelid retraction (a drooping or retracted upper eyelid)
  • Sagging of the lower eyelid
  • A backward tilt of the articial eye

Many of these features are amenable to surgical improvement. Go to the section on Orbital Implant Surgery for more information about the treatment options for this condition.
