What is RESTYLANE?
RESTYLANE® is a gel that is injected into the skin with a very fine needle to:
· Soften skin wrinkles, lines and folds
· Rejuvenate the skin
· Add fullness and definition to lips
RESTYLANE consists of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance already present in your body. Once in the skin, RESTYLANE works by creating volume and by improving the condition of the dermis. (Note: some dermal fillers are derived from animal substances. The hyaluronic acid in RESTYLANE is non-animal derived).
RESTYLANE can be used alone but is often used in conjunction with
anti-wrinkle injections which improve lines and
wrinkles by selectively weakening the muscles which cause these.
RESTYLANE is produced in a variety of consistencies which are selectively used in different facial areas. These are:
- Restylane Touch – this is used around the eyes
- Restylane – this is used for mild facial lines and wrinkles
- Perlane – this is used for the nasolabial folds
- Restylane Vital – see below
- Restylane Lipp – see below

1. Can the Restylane products be combined with other types of implants?
Restylane, Restylane Touch and Restylane Perlane should not be used together with any other injectable implant. The Restylane products should not be injected into an area where a permanent implant has been placed.
2. How long does the effect of a treatment with a Restylane product last?
Lines, wrinkles and folds:
In general, follow up treatment is needed after 6-12 months.
Lips:
In general follow up treatment is needed after about 6 months.
But it depends on many factors, such as the structure of the skin, lifestyle, age, the degree of perfection demanded by the patient and the injection technique of the practitioner. Clinical experience indicates that touch up and follow up treatment will add to the duration.
3. Are there any side effects or adverse reactions?
Yes, after the injection of a Restylane produce, some common injection related reactions might occur. These reactions include erythema, swelling, pain, itching, discolouration or tenderness at the implant site.
Reactions thought to be of a hypersensitivity nature have been reported in about 1 in every 2,000 treatments, Other types of reactions are even more rare.
4. Can the products be used for patients during pregnancy or lactation?
Treatment with Restylane, Restylane Touch and Restylane Perlane during pregnancy or lactation has not been tested for.
5. Are there any known interactions with antibiotic?
Treatment with the products in combination with other drugs and devices has not been tested for.
Theoretically there is no basis for an interaction with commonly used antibiotics.
6. Can patients with different kinds of allergies be more sensitive to the Products?
So far we have seen no connection between patients with allergies and patients that report a reaction to Restylane, Restylane Touch and Restylane Perlane.
7. If a patient has had problems with recurrent facial herpes simplex can treatment with a Restylane product contribute to another herpes simplex eruption?
There is a risk that the injection process itself, i.e. the insertion of a needle into the skin could contribute to another herpes simplex eruption.
8. Should you give patients suffering from herpes ‘special’ treatment?
The physician should take a decision about the need for prophylactic treatment in consultation with the patient.
9. Should the Restylane products cause hyperpigmentation?
No such problem have been reported.
10. Can a patient suffering from an autoimmune disease be treated with the Restylane products?
Clinical experience of treating patients with an autoimmune disease is very limited, but there is no indication of an increased risk. Theoretically there is no reason to assume hat there should be an increased risk in treating these patients with the Restylane products. It is at the discretion of the practitioner to decide in each case, taking into account, e.g. the specific disease, concomitant medications etc.
11. Why do the lips sometimes become very swollen immediately after treatment?
Unfortunately we do not yet know the cause of this but we have no reason to believe that this is an immunological reaction.
12. How long does the swelling normally last?
Normally the swelling is gone within a week after injection into the lips.
13. What happens if you use laser or chemical peeling on top of an area treated with a Restylane product? If laser treatment, chemical peeling or any other procedure based on active dermal response is considered after treatment with a Restylane product, there is a theoretical risk of eliciting an inflammatory reaction at the implant site. This also applies if a Restylane product is administered before the skin has healed completely after such as procedure.
14. If a patient has had laser treatment, how long should you wait before treating with a Restylane product?
It is recommended to wait until the treated area is totally healed (normally 4-6 weeks).
15. Which products are recommended for treatment of the lips?
Restylane Lipp. See below.
- the new look of skin rejunvenation
KEY FACTS
- Restylane Vital is a new development in skin rejunvenation, introducing the concept of moisturizing from within to improve skin tone and elasticity, stimulationg the production of healthy looking skin to combat the signs of photo ageing (sun damage) and reverse the ageing process.
- Restylane Vital is a smooth, pure crystal clear hyaluronic acid (HA) gel which when injected into the skin (deep dermis) replenishes our own native HA which we lose through ageing
- The natural hydrating properties of Restylane Vital improve the condition of the dermis. It boosts the skin’s natural hydration system to improve the skin’s elasticity, tone and overall health.
- Restylane Vital promotes the flow of essential nutrients from the bloodstream to skin cells. This encourages skin cell activity and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin to keep our skin looking plump and hydrated.
- Restylane Vital plays an important part in mopping up skin damaging free radicals which can cause cell damage and premature ageing.
- Restylane Vital is effective in reversing the damage caused by photo-ageing particularly in those difficult to treat areas that “give away” your age, such as your neck, décolletage, and the backs of your hands. Restylane Vital can also be used on the face.
- Restylane Vital release hyaluronic acid gradually over a period of time. The benefits of this treatment generally last for several months. An initial, intense treatment of Restylane Vital comprises 2 to 3 series of very fine injections four weeks apart. There are no restrictions on how often you can receive treatment. In fact, you can repeat treatment with Restylane Vital as often as you feel is necessary. Typically a maintenance treatment would be required around 6-9 months.
Restylane Lipp
Restylane Lipp is especially designed for the lips. It is formulated to be more resistant to the intrinsic massaging caused by constant lip movement.
