Cosmetic Upper Eyelid Surgery FAQ

Blepharoplasty, or cosmetic eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure designed to rejuvenate sagging or tired-looking eyes by removing excess skin, fat, and muscle from the eyelids. This procedure can be performed for cosmetic reasons or medical purposes, such as to improve peripheral vision by lifting drooping eyelids. Here is a look into some of the most commonly asked questions about blepharoplasty.

What can cosmetic eyelid surgery do for me? Blepharoplasty is an ideal procedure for patients looking to improve the appearance of loose or sagging eyelids. Eyelid surgery can also smooth the appearance of wrinkles in the outer corner of the eyes. It is a misconception that blepharoplasty will raise the eyebrows, however. An eyebrow lift is a separate procedure, though both an eyebrow lift and blepharoplasty can be performed in a combination surgery.

Who is a ideal candidate for blepharoplasty? The best candidates for cosmetic eyelid surgery are in generally good health and do not smoke. It is also important that patients do not have any serious eye illnesses, such as glaucoma or a detached retina. Patients with thyroid disorders, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure may not qualify.

How is blepharoplasty performed? This procedure is typically performed as an out-patient procedure, and will usually last anywhere between 45 minutes and 2 hours. An incision is made along the crease of the upper eyelid, fat deposits are re-positioned or removed, and muscles are tightened. Often a lower eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed via an incision on the inside of the eyelid, avoiding visible scars.

What is the recovery period like, and what can I expect from the results? During recovery, is it normal to experience some swelling, bruising, irritation, and dry eyes. Most patients can usually return to work with a few days to a week, and will be able to return to strenuous activity and exercise after 2 weeks. Contact lenses and eye make up cannot be worn for 2 weeks after surgery. Results will be noticeable after swelling subsides, and will continue to improve for up to a year. Scars from blepharoplasty are inconspicuous, and will continue to fade over time. Most patients feel that blepharoplasty makes them look up to 10 years younger.
