Spreading Thyroid Eye Disease Awareness

This spring, a public and patient event will be held to highlight Thyroid Eye Disease (TED). This gathering will spread awareness of this condition, which causes discomfort and negative aesthetic changes in the eye area due to shifting hormone levels

The meeting will take place from 11 am – 5.30 pm on May 16, 2014, and will be held in Newcastle upon Tyne. The event’s aim is to draw together patients with TED, their families and caregivers, medical professionals and those who would like to know more about the disorder.

European and UK experts in the medical field will educate the public and patients about the priorities of future research into Thyroid Eye Disease. There will also be open discussions about this eye condition and what can be done to treat it, as well as to spread awareness of its causes. The event is being organised by the European Group on Graves’ Orbitopathy (EUGOGO) and the Thyroid Eye Disease Amsterdam Declaration Implementation Group UK (TEAMeD UK).

The organisers’ goal is to help the public gain a greater understanding of TED, how it’s managed, how a patient’s thyroid gland is controlled during TED and how their quality of life may be affected by the condition – as well as how it can be improved through diagnosis and proper treatment.

Oculoplastic surgeons are specialists who have an interest in Thyroid Eye Disease. For those who suspect that a thyroid or hormone imbalance may be causing their eye condition, a general practitioner or local ophthalmic department should be able to direct patients as to where their closest oculoplastic surgeon is.

Those interested in attending the TED Newcastle Meeting this spring are advised to apply early by emailing info@btf-thyroid.org for more information. They can also contact the British Thyroid Foundation on 01423 709707 / 709448.
